The Result Of The 2007 Presidential Election

Today is a national holiday. This day, in Korea, there is a large scale election going. The presidential election. Well, now the new president is elected. The new president is Lee Myeong Bak, a Grand National Party Candidate who emphasized that he will try to improve the economy. Well, let’s see what happened at the election day.

Before the Presidential Election Day, 12 candidates went all over Korea to ‘plead’ to citizens to vote for them. However, most of them got low supports- most of them lower than 3%. But the 3 major candidates dominated the election. One candidate was Lee Myeong Bak, a candidate of Grand National Party. He has recently been accused of being related with the BBK incident. He was suspected to have manipulated the stock market. However, because of his saying that he will promote Korea’s economy, he got a little more than 50% of all the votes. Consequently, he got elected as a president. A distant-second Candidate was Jung Dong Yeong, who was from United New Democratic Party, and he dominated about 20% of the votes. The third candidate was Lee Whae Chang, who wasn’t from any party. Despite the fact that he wasn’t from any party, he got about 15% of all votes.

This year, voting rates turned out to be 63%. Which is higher than most countries in the world, but a very low rate in the view of Koreans. Lee Myeong Bak is scheduled to be the official president of Korea at Feburary 25th, 2008.
