TECH CENTER- Phones and Korea

1. WIPI PROBLEM

There is a problem surrounding the controversial policy of WIPI. WIPI is a our country’s independant internet platform, and it is quite different from WIFI. WIPI has its own way of browsing sites, and all download-games are based on this platform. However, this WIPI platform isn’t included in the iPhone, Blackberry, or any other phones from America, and Europe. Well, this is a serious problem, as this WIPI policy limits the selection of a customer. Well, I think this will be solved soon, as the Ministry of Knoledge and Economy is revising this policy.

2. HTC Touch Dual in Korea

The popular windows mobile based HTC touch dual is launched in Korea. It is in sale for approximately 590 dollars, in a 2 year contract with SK TELECOM, the nation’s leading telecommunication company. The taiwan based company, HTC, included a WIPI platform in its TOUCH DUAL, so it can be released in Korea. SK Telecom plans to bring in HTC Diamond in Korea next quarter.

3. SOUL vs. Secret

The once controversial phone, which was released in Mobile World Congress (MWC), the SOUL phone, will now play its war against the LG’s largely polular SECRET phone, which is the 3rd phone in Black Label series. The price of the two phones are same. But as the SOUL that is relased in Korean doesn’t have a SD card slot, most people think that the Secret phone will win. (Both phones are slightly more expensive than HTC TOUCH DUAL)

Microsoft Demos Touch-Screen Application

>>>>SUMMARY>>>>>>

Windows 7, as it is known as the next version of Windows will incorporate Touch-screen application. MS Chief Exec. Steve Ballmer said it is “just the smallest snippet” of the Windows 7 OS, targeted for release in late 2009. The thing that you can do with Windows 7 is almost like the thing you can do on “SURFACE”, which is a touch screen- table computer made by MS. Microsoft has unveiled a little bit about the Windows 7, which is in contrast with the highlighted Windows Vista Release.

>>>>Opinion/Column>>>>>> (Will Windows 7’s Touch Screen App. be a revolution?)

The anticipated release of Windows 7 at late 2009 might open the era of touch screen computer, and this might change everything! The highly anticipated Touch Screen application will be revolution. Although it will take some time for the market to adapt and launch a touch screen desktop and laptop, it still will be a revolution. As the concept of touch screen computer looks strange, and even wonderful for some Tech Geeks, people will actually buy those things in order to experience the new type of computers. However, it still is in veil that if the computer industry could adapt fast enough to make the touch screen application of Windows 7 successful.

Just a little difference may have killed a person

“The astronauts could have been burnt into pieces when re-entering the atmosphere”.

When the 3 cosmonauts including Korea’s first astronaut, So Yun Lee, re entered the atmosphere, there was a high possibility of being burnt alive into pieces, according to Comersant, one of Russia’s top newspaper. It reported that the re-entering attitude of the Soyuz TMA-11, has been wrong because of a mysterious factor. It descended toward the ground with the hatch heading toward the ground. If that was the case, there is a high possibility of the hatch melting down. If so, the astronauts could have easily been dead. However, the most dangerous situation passed away when the landing module started to adjust its angle, and began to descend in the right position. Well, just a little difference may have killed 3 people.

Myspace launched in Korea

The biggest social network service (SNS), MySpace, has been launched in Korea. MySpace made its own official korean website (kr.myspace.com).

>>About MySpace>>

MySpace is kind of a blog service that enables users to decorate their own hompages usnig musics, video clips, picture, and text. It is also one of the biggest network that enables users to make friends with each other.

>>The Korean Launch>>

According to AP, MySpace launched its MiniLog service for its Korean launch. Also, the color of the main page of MySpace has been changed a little.

MySpace plans to enable users to share musics, video clips and etc, despite the languages that one speaks. MySpace is becoming entusiastic, expecting that Korean people will be excited to make friends from many other country.

>>The doubts>>

But it is highly doubtful that MySpace will be much of that success, mainly because Cyworld, the nation’s local SNS service is predominant in the SNS industry, and also because of the fact that many other foreign internet services, including Google (Which is the No.1 search engine in most part of the world), and Second Life (Which is very popular in other countries including the US) is just struggling to survive in this local-company predominant country.

Windows/Mac can be hakced, Linux is safe!!!

At the OS Hacking Competition, Microsoft Windows and Mac Leopard was hacked, while Linux was not. The hacking competition took place at Canada, Vancouver, starting from March 26th, and endingr at March 29th.  Among the 3 Operating System (OS), that was hacked, only Linux survived the hacking. Participators choose one of the OS they will hack: their choice was among Windows Vista, Mac Leopard, and the Linux. It was held like this: The highest level competition took place at the first day, with rewards that was more than 20000 dollars, and the second day, which the “Intermediate level hacking competition” took place, had rewards of 10000 dollars, and the third day (Easy one) had rewards of 5000 dollars. The first OS to be hacked was the Mac Leopard, which endured less than 2 full days. Charley Miller, a Security system expert, first hacked the Mac using the Safari Browser. The second OS to be hacked, as one can see, is the Windows Vista. Windows Vista endured little more than 2 days, but had been hacked by Shine Mackerly, who used the JAVA system to avoid the security system of the Window Vista Service Pack 1. However, Linux endured all three days. Linux was the OS that was found with a lot of bugs, so it is quite surprising to see that it survived the attack from the professionals.

iPod is the popular one… But what is the first MP3 player?

MP3 players, including Sony Ericcson’s Walkman, Apple’s iPod, and Samsung’s YP-P2 exist everywhere. But, have you wondered what the first MP3 player in the world is? Well, I have, and I quickly found out that Korea was the first nation to develop a MP3 player, 10 years ago.

10 years ago at CeBIT 1998, which was held at Hanover, Germany, many people gathered around the booth of Sae Han Information Technology Corporation, which is now defunct. The name of the model was MPman F10. This model hardly caused a ripple when it was first seen. Back then, nobody was quite sure what it was. “No matter how the Korean staff tried to explain what an MP3 player was, people didn’t understand why they needed such a device because they could listen to music with CDs or cassettes. A few people accepted the MP3 player as something cool, but most people didn’t take it seriously,” said an official at local tech company MPIXAR, and an old hand who was around MP3 players in their early days.

However, despite this, Sae Han Information Technology corporation put it up to mass production. Then, Samsung Electronics, which is known for its YEPP, PAVV, and ANYCALL brand, bought that MP3 players, and sold it under its name. Obviously, Samsung knew the potential of MP3 players. However, disappointingly, this failed.

Despite it’s disappointing debut, local electronics companies, such as Samsung, and Reigncom has developed a lot of MP3 players. A Korean MP3 player produced by Reigncom, was even called the future of digital life by Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas in January 2005. But the iPod’s launch has made Korea companies sandwiched between cheap Chinese products and high-quality, low priced, iPods. Well, Korean companies should try hard to get out of that sandwich situation.

The only thing that I want to say is that please save our natin’s MP3 industry, by buying some products made by Korean Companies, such as Samsung, iRiver, and etc……. They are better than ipod, and they are cheaper than iPod. Why look for something just’TRENDY’, while there is something better, and cheaper?
